Mr. John Palmer Beasley, known by all locals, to be honored at HCHS Homecoming game

HCHS is honored to have such a distinguished member of the community serve as master of ceremonies at this year's Homecoming game.

John Palmer Beasley

Pharmacist and Owner, Beasley Pharmacy

Columbia, Alabama

John Palmer Beasley was born April 29, 1933 in Dothan, AL, first born of Claude Lee and Ida Harvin Palmer Beasley. He lived in Blakely, GA for the first two years of his life and has called Columbia home for the past 80 years.

John was an outstanding student and participated in all sports at Houston County High School in Columbia. As a student, he was valedictorian and president of the senior class of 1951. He was also recognized by his classmates as Mr. HCHS and Most Likely to Succeed. He was a starting offensive tackle and defensive end on the football team playing both ways through most games. During his three years of high school football he never played in a losing game as the Houston County Lions went 28-0-2 during those three football seasons (1948-1950). He was also the place kicker and kicked the two extra points that was the difference in the game as Houston County defeated the Geneva Panthers 14-12 in the 1950 Peanut Bowl in Wiregrass Stadium in Dothan to complete the 10-0 season. In his senior year the basketball team also made it to the 1951 state basketball tournament.

Upon high school graduation, John Palmer Beasley attended Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham for his freshman year. John then transferred to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) for the remaining three years of his college career, majoring in Pharmacy. John graduated from API on March 17, 1955 with his pharmacy degree.

John purchased Columbia Drug Company on October 1, 1955 and started Beasley Pharmacy.

During the past 60 years John Palmer Beasley has won numerous awards and been involved in a multitude of civic and church activities, including:

-          Member, Chairman, Board of Trustees for Houston County High School in Columbia

-          60-year sponsor and supporter of Houston County High School and HCHS Athletics
